Antivirus programs help prevent spyware and viruses from infecting a computer and for that reason are one of the critical software programs each computer must have running constantly. There are thousands of spyware and viruses on the Internet, and any one of them can lead to damage to personal files or the computer’s operating system.
If your computer doesn’t have an antivirus program installed and running, we highly recommend you set up one today. Follow the steps below for help on how to set up and upgrade an antivirus program on your computer.
Install the antivirus program
To begin installing antivirus software on your computer, follow the steps below.
In the event that you bought the antivirus program from a retail store, insert the CD or DVD to the computer’s disk. The installation process should begin automatically, using a window opening to help guide you through the installation procedure. In case you downloaded the antivirus program on the Internet, locate the downloaded file on your computer. If the downloaded file is a zip file, unzip the file to extract and access the setup files. Start looking for a file called setup.exe, install.exe, or something similar, then double-click that document.
The installation process should begin, with a window opening to help guide you through the installation procedure. From the installation procedure window, follow the steps given to install the antivirus program. The installation procedure provides recommended options so the antivirus program will operate properly, which in many instances can be accepted as is. The one exception is when the installation procedure recommends that you also install any toolbars for Internet browsers or other useful programs on your computer.
If prompted to install other applications together with the antivirus program, uncheck all boxes or decrease the install of those additional programs. No extra programs should be necessary for the antivirus program to set up and run successfully on your own computer. When the installation procedure is finished, close from the install window. When used, remove the CD or DVD in the computer’s disk.
The antivirus software is now installed and ready to operate. While it might not be required, recommend that you restart your computer so that any modified settings from the operating system may take effect properly.
After being set up, you can also get a prompt to update the antivirus program. It’s strongly recommended that you upgrade it, even if you don’t get a prompt to do so. Proceed to the next section below for help on the best way best to upgrade the antivirus program.
Update the antivirus program after installation
From the box, antivirus programs aren’t up-to-date and are overlooking the most recent spyware and virus definitions. Without the most recent definitions, the antivirus program won’t know about the most recently created spyware and viruses, making your computer vulnerable to infection.
After installing the antivirus program, we strongly recommend that you upgrade it with the most recent virus and spyware definitions. The updates will enable the antivirus program to protect your computer from all viruses and spyware.
Oftentimes, the antivirus program will automatically ask if you want to check for and install the most recent updates. If prompted to do so, select Yes to upgrade the antivirus program. If it doesn’t prompt you to upgrade immediately, see our page on how best to update your antivirus program.
Enable automatic updates for the antivirus program
By default, most antivirus programs enable the automatic upgrade feature. It’s strongly advised that automatic updates be empowered in order for your antivirus program to stay up-to-date constantly.
